Mad Honey Hunting Nepal: An Extreme & Spiritual Himalayan Tradition

Mad Honey Hunting Nepal is far from your average picnic in the park; it’s an extreme sport with a high chance of becoming one with nature. This group of brave Nepalese, armed with courage and a serious lack of fear, looks up at a cliff that makes the world’s tallest mountain look like a molehill. “Look up!” shouts the leader of the group, pointing at the vertical rock face. These aren’t just cliffs; they are colossal, unforgiving walls of stone, home to the elusive Himalayan giant bees and their potent, mind-altering honey. The air crackles with a mix of anticipation and a healthy respect for the dangers ahead.

As they prepare, the sheer scale of the endeavor becomes apparent. There are no safety harnesses or modern climbing gear here – just ropes woven from local grasses, bamboo ladders, and generations of inherited wisdom. Each man understands the immense risks: a slip, a frayed rope, or a swarm of angry bees could mean a fatal fall. Yet, the allure of the mad honey, with its unique medicinal and psychoactive properties, drives them onward, a testament to a tradition as old as the mountains themselves.

Hunting mad honey is a very spiritual process. There are offerings to god for the safety of the hunters. Usually, it is a 3-day process. The first day, the hunting party gathers around and prays to the forest god and sacrifices an animal or a bird for the god. The second day, an experienced hunter will climb the bamboo ladder to see the dangers ahead and make necessary preparations. They camp near the site just to make sure the evening and night goes well. The third day, the hunters prepare bamboo ladders for everybody. A fire is made just below the hill. This is done for the smoke. As the smoke calms down the bees – make a note that these bees are the world’s largest bees, i.e., The Himalayan Giant Honey Bee – after some hours, the hunter climbs up the ladder and harvests the honey which concludes the three days of spiritual process of mad honey hunting in Nepal.
